This piece will be part of my concentration, a piece representative of the spiritual side of my identity. In both Western and Asian cultures, there are Zodiac signs that are assigned to you at birth. These signs are meant to predict aspects of your life such as personality and compatibility. When I was younger, I believed in these signs and took them somewhat seriously. In Western astrology, I am a Pisces (twin fishes) and according to the Eastern Zodiac, I am a dragon. The stark contrast between these two creatures could not be any more different. One is a creature of the oceans whereas the other is a fiery mythical beast.
This difference has eluded me- which animal am I? In this embroidery work, I explored the possibility of being a part of both zodiac signs at the same time. I slowly embroidered the outline of both depictions against the vibrant, starry sky. Although the embroidery is simply outlined, the conservation of line was the greatest challenge. The variance of both long and short lines help give the creatures more dimension and character. Overall, this project gave me great experience and helped me practice picking the best line length for the situation. Line, as a design element, is often overlooked, but the fundamentals is worth exploring deeply into more often than not.
