"Prenatal" is an acrylic painting about a woman trapped inside this placenta-like entrapment. By itself, this image would not have depth; however, I purposely used color and brushstrokes to attempt to create a dark atmosphere. I chose the base color of the painting to be purple because when a human does not get enough airflow, they turn blue and purple. This suffocation is a topic that aligns itself with the containment imagery that the woman is encased with. Regarding brushstrokes, I used lots of dry brush to create texture. This is especially apparent due to the contrast between the dark purple and white. I was also contrasting the round shape of the body with the rectangular edges of the canvas.
In the future, I will continue exploring this piece through paintings called "Birth" and "Postpartum"
