With my Art 11 class, we took a field trip to the Emily Carr University Grad show! It's a day where the graduates display their work which range from traditional oil painting to abstract modern art. I've taken a few pictures of the pieces that resounded most to me. Firstly, an artist encased several objects in resin such as a sculpture of a gold fish, leaves, and sea shells. It gives a "captured in time" feeling and I will definitely be researching how this process works soon!
Next, I encountered a clay sculpture of animal parts put together like a birthday cake on top of a bale of hay. The smell of the hay was overpowering. Not only was the piece visually striking, but appealed to our sense of smell as well!
After walking down a long white hall, I found 3 pots hanging from the wall with baby doll hands growing out of it. It felt somewhat like nightmare fuel especially for those who have a phobia over dolls. The arrangement of the pieces is dynamic and really feels like the undead dolls are coming alive.
Throughout the various sectors of art, embroidery was a popular technique. Bikes, comics, and words were carefully depicted with thread. For Grade 12, I will be experimenting with this visual medium. It'll be a challenge as I've never used a needle and thread before!
